The divisions which caused the largest downward contribution to the CPI in the month were Transport (-0.52%) and Clothing & Footwear (-0.37%). The divisions which caused the largest upward contribution to the CPI in the year were Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (+1.95%), Transport (+1.80%), Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (+0.50%) and Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (+0.31%). A detailed breakdown of the individual components of each of the 12 COICOP divisions is presented in Tables 4 to 15. Table 17 shows the contribution of each 2-digit COICOP 1 division to the overall change in the CPI. There were increases in Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (+9.9%) and Recreation & Culture (+0.6%).Ĭontributions to the overall CPI – annual change The most significant monthly price changes were decreases in Clothing & Footwear (-8.0%) and Transport (-3.7%). During January of last year, prices rose by 0.1% in the month. There were decreases in Clothing & Footwear (-3.7%) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services (-0.8%).Ĭonsumer Prices in January, as measured by the CPI, decreased by 0.4% in the month. The most notable changes in the year were increases in Transport (+14.1%), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (+12.0%), Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (+8.4%) and Recreation & Culture (+2.6%). Prices on average, as measured by the CPI, were 5.0% higher in January compared with January 2021.
